Calynn M. Lawrence. She’s the cosmic fusion between the Billionaire Diaries and
Princess Diaries and she’s shaking up the game right now in the fashion/entertainment
Public Relations industry! She’s a crazy cool 22-year-old with fairytale faith who’s
amassed a pretty impressive business portfolio! Having won seven awards to date for
her work in creative PR, becoming an 18-year-old Founder of The Fresh Faces Project
which is a nonprofit movement that has helped over 100 small businesses and talents,
as well as executive producing a documentary showcasing many entrepreneurs that
gained over 30,000 views in the first month! Now, she’s nurturing her latest and greatest
project which is executive producing a new reality show set to premiere online in late
August called Chicago Talent! She shared a few thoughts with us about what’s going on
in her life and career.
What motivates you to excel in your endeavors?
Knowing that I can always do better. Knowing that there is always someone greater,
faster, stronger than I am. With that said, I don’t compete against the others, I compete
against myself. I always want to top my last which may be the death of me because it
isn’t always practical. Yet, somehow knowing that I can reach more, climb higher, move quicker and do better just motivates me to do the best and be the best that I can. It’s
that same fairytale faith you speak of that’s the fuel to my engine.
What is your goal for Chicago Talent? Financial and personal.
I want the world to recognize Chicago in the same light that they do New York and Los
Angeles in terms of talent and drive. There are countless artists and entrepreneurs in
Chicago who are gifted beyond words and so many people don’t even know they exist.
Personally, I want to shed a spotlight on as many of them as I can using my resources
and my platform so that hopefully they get the exposure and recognition that they
deserve. Financially, I would like to be able to use any profits to donate to and invest in
the cast members’ businesses so that they can use that money for their own gain.
How does it feel to know you have impacted so many lives at such a young age?
Thank you. It feels more than satisfying, more than validating, it’s my sense of worth
almost entirely. Only because I don’t view it as a luxury, I look at it as an obligation. I
really feel that it’s my life’s mission and I’m going to continue living by my motto of “each
one reach one.” I don’t expect anyone else to make a change if I’m not leading by
Who are some people who have impacted your life? Both secularly and personally.
Career inspirations can go on forever from Kelly Cutrone, Anna Wintour, Sophia
Amoruso and Andre Leon Talley (fashion wise) to the likes of even Oprah, Mona Scott
Young, Wendy Williams and Tyler Perry (media wise).
Personally, I’ve got to thank my parents for raising all three of their daughters to be
strong, independent, smart, ambitious women. They may have been hard on us growing
up but it pushed us all to meet our potential, my mother Dawn being a great example of
a real woman herself. I’m grateful for any and all support and love from my family. I’m
happy to be able to say I have an army of honorary sisters who were there for me:
Marshae, Nik, Ari, Mikaela, Nailah and more. As well as any person in school or at any
of my places of employment who pushed me to exceed and who helped me do so. I
have so many people to be thankful for who impacted my life that I can’t even list them
all. I’m even thankful for the many guys who broke my heart because you were a fire
under my feet to outgrow and outdo you. And, that’s real, on the set
Your visual project and spoken word poem Superman Is Dead reportedly reached
over 50,000 people earlier this year and gained a lot of press. Following that, your
next visual project/spoken word combo Josh Paramore the Great has reportedly
reached almost 20,000 people. You clearly have a knack for these love/tragedy
inspired blogs. Do you plan on releasing another one of these projects on your
Thank you. I’m so busy with with Chicago Talent and several other things that I am
trying to get off the ground that I probably won’t release another one of these projects
for a while. Josh Paramore the Great was only released two months ago so I’ll let
people have a chance to enjoy that for now. But, I’m certain that I will eventually drop
another project on my blog like them.
Are there any lucky men whom you’re at least currently interested in who might
be a future muse?
Yes, there is only one person whom I am currently interested in and I’m not presently
actively seeking out others. He may or may not serve as a muse for future projects. I’m
not yet sure but certainly not opposed. I could definitely see some very beautiful art
being based on his inspiration.
Does it bother you if people are upset that you’re seemingly closed minded to
other candidates at the moment?
Not at all. I see a lot of potential in my current interest, maybe more than he even
understands, and would like to allow time for me to explore that. If that fails to prosper, I
will look definitely into my other options.
What does real success mean to you?
Real success means that I have exhausted every avenue that I possibly can in terms of
making a difference. I would like to truly be able to say that I helped as many talents
and entrepreneurs rise to their potential as I could. And, I honestly can’t quantify that.
It’s just a void in my spirit that has to filled. Until then, I will never really feel that I’ve
done my best..done my PART, shall I say…It’s not an option to me, it’s an obligation.
If, when, you become a billionaire, what will you do with your money?
I don’t know. It’s kind of difficult to envision myself with that kind of money. Maybe travel
the world doing community service, feed and house the poor, open offices across the
globe for The Fresh Faces Project, give financial support to underprivileged students,
take care of my family so they never have to worry again…and so much more that would
take too long to explain.
Do you think you’ll change the world?
I won’t say I’ll change the world. That may be beyond my capabilities. But, I will say that
I’ll make a difference.
